Physiotherapy
Summary
Physiotherapists are trained to support cancer patients through recovery and managing treatment side effects. Regular physical exercise, recommended by the American Cancer Society, can help reduce fatigue, pain, and other side effects from cancer treatments, and even improve survival rates. Physiotherapists work with patients to create personalized treatment plans, focusing on goals like improving mobility, reducing pain, managing lymphedema, and aiding in the return to work or activities. They can also guide patients in maintaining a healthy lifestyle through home or community exercise programs, which have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. Some physiotherapists have specialized training in oncology rehabilitation and use research to tailor programs based on both short- and long-term goals. Understanding a patient’s treatment plan, current medications, and other health factors is crucial for creating an effective rehabilitation strategy.
