Cancer Community Nippising

Local Cancer Resources

A wide range of local resources is available to support individuals affected by cancer and their families. Chemotherapy and oncology units across hospitals in North Bay, Temiskaming, and West Nipissing provide educational materials, comfort items like wigs and quilts, and access to experienced nurses for guidance. The Canadian Cancer Society offers informational pamphlets, wigs, and support through its North Bay office and website. Additional help is available through the Near North Palliative Care Network, which offers holistic, volunteer-based support including emotional, physical, and bereavement care. The Northeast Health Line is a valuable online tool for finding local services, while public libraries and allied health professionals such as dietitians, psychologists, and social workers offer further support, information, and connection throughout the cancer journey.

Canadian Cancer Society

The Canadian Cancer Society offers a wide range of online information and resources through its website. A local branch is located in North Bay, which coordinates community fundraising events, provides wigs for individuals undergoing cancer treatment, and offers a selection of informational pamphlets and booklets from the Canadian Cancer Society. More comprehensive materials can be ordered directly from the website. Please note that the local office is not staffed by cancer or community resource experts and operates within a limited mandate.

The Chemotherapy Unit provides a selection of pamphlets and booklets in the waiting room for patients and families. Due to limited space, additional materials are stored nearby—if you can’t find what you’re looking for, please ask a volunteer or the unit clerk for assistance. Bulletin boards in the area also display helpful information, including details about local events and education sessions held at the Sudbury Cancer Centre. Please note that no formal education sessions are currently offered locally.

Nurses are an excellent resource—don’t hesitate to ask them questions, as they have extensive knowledge and experience to share.

The unit also has knitted caps, cloth caps, knitted knockers (lightweight breast prostheses), and PICC line cuffs available. These items are stored in drawers in the waiting area—staff can assist you in finding what you need.
